Rodney Band
One-of-one sculptural works in rare wood—revealing the extraordinary within nature.
01 / Selected Works
Each piece begins with what the wood already holds.
02 / About
Sculptural works in wood — shaped across 25+ years of craft and exploration.
Rodney Band began working with wood in the early 1990s, developing a sculptural practice rooted in traditional turning.
From his studio in Kommetjie, Cape Town, he explores balance, texture and the natural character of hardwoods.
His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, while the practice continues to evolve through an ongoing exploration of form and material.
03 / Process
The Signature Process
Discover the Process-
Select & Turn
A carefully selected log is mounted on the lathe and shaped with a traditional chisel.
-
Hand Sculpt
Before the interior is fully finished on the lathe, Rodney stops and continues by hand using custom tools and techniques developed over more than 25 years.
-
Refine the Form
The hybrid method creates a perfectly round exterior and subtly oval interior, moving the work beyond functional turning into expressive sculpture over three to six weeks.
